4 Fall Packing Tips for Your Next Estes Park Getaway

Fall is here! If you’ve ever been to Estes Park in the fall, you would probably agree that it’s a beautiful time to visit, with the vibrant foliage and wildlife being extra active in Rocky Mountain National Park. Of course, fall brings cooler temperatures. While the mornings and evenings cool off in the mid-30s to low-40s, the daytime temperatures can range anywhere from the mid-50s to low-70s. With this large of a range in temperature, it can get a little tricky when knowing what to pack. Fortunately, I’ve got you covered!

The key word to remember when packing for a fall trip to Estes Park is “layers.” Since the temperature is likely to fluctuate anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees during the day, packing layers will make it easy to adjust.

Here are my top tips for packing your suitcase:

1. Pack Your Layers

Estes Park is a casual town. Unless you are visiting for a wedding, leave the cocktail dresses and sport coats at home because jeans are acceptable at even the nicest restaurants!

For daytime exploring, be sure you wear long pants and layer up with a t-shirt and a fleece jacket. It’s also not a bad idea to pack a waterproof jacket should there be any rain in the Rockies.

Always pack your layers when visiting Estes Park in the fall! Daytime temperatures can get up to 70 degrees and drop to mid-30s at night.

For the evening, whether you’re going to dinner with friends or just walking around downtown Estes, you can’t go wrong with jeans and a sweater. It’s an easy, standard outfit for men and women that is acceptable anywhere you go. You may want to bring a vest or light jacket for an added layer on cooler nights.

2. Bring Hiking Essentials

When it comes to shoes, COMFORT IS KEY! Whether you are going on a hike or just walking the streets of downtown, you want to make sure your feet are happy. Trail running shoes or traction boots are both good options to pack. I would also recommend packing warm crew or ankle socks. Since most people walk a lot while they are in Estes, socks that stay on your feet while providing some additional warmth are likely to make your exploring more enjoyable!

3. Protect Your Skin

Estes Park is a VERY dry climate with little humidity. For those who have never been to Estes, you will notice your skin and hair getting dry pretty quickly. Make sure you remember to throw these items in your suitcase to help protect yourself from the dry altitude with:

  1. Sunscreen
  2. Face/body lotion
  3. Extra hair conditioner
  4. CHAPSTICK!

4. Useful Add-Ons

When visiting Estes Park, there are a few accessories you want to make sure to remember:

Hat/sunglasses – It’s VERY sunny in Estes since you are closer to the sun at the higher elevation. Make sure to pack a pair of sunglasses or a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

Camera – Some of the most beautiful views you will ever see are in Estes Park in the fall. Be sure to bring your camera to capture all the moments and the picturesque foliage.

Backpack/sling bag – You will likely be doing a lot of walking when you visit Estes. Carrying a backpack or sling bag rather than a purse will make it easier to keep your hands free while you explore.

Water bottle – It’s very easy to get dehydrated in Estes Park with the high altitude. Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day to avoid altitude sickness and keep yourself feeling your best.
